The Eames Lounge Chair & Ottoman

This is the classic midcentury chair, designed by Charles Eames in 1956 for the Herman Miller Furniture company. There was nothing like it in the day, and it spawned a revolution in function and design that truly changed how we view furniture. Architectural Historian, Esther McCoy once said, "no other piece of furniture has so stirred the mind and heart of the twentieth century both here and abroad."
The chair has immortalized the names of Charles and Ray Eames. The first chair they created for the MoMA show "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" in 1940 was far from perfect and they struggled with coming up with the best way to mold layers of plywood.  A decade later, it was perfected and a run of fifty chairs was mechanically tooled and handmade for the by Herman Miller showroom as office chairs.
If you want one of these chairs, they are still produced today by The Herman Miller Furniture Company for about $5295.00! If you are looking for something cheaper, there is always this Mid Century Lounge Chair with Ottoman on Amazon. Or, you can search for a vintage one. I snapped a picture of the chair in the picture below when I was shopping at the Riverside Center Antique Mall in Cincinnati last week. I'm not sure if it's an original Eames chair, but it is beautiful and has leather upholstery!
